New Delhi — The COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread in Asia-Pacific countries as India’s tally is approaching 8 million while Indonesia reported 3,520 newly-confirmed cases on Tuesday.
India’s COVID-19 tally reached 7,946,429 even as 36,470 more cases were registered during the past 24 hours, according to the latest data released by the federal health ministry.
The death toll surged to 119,502, with 488 deaths recorded since Monday morning.
This is the first time in over four months when new cases per day have fallen below 40,000-mark, and the second day when deaths per day fell below 500 in the country.
Still there are 625,857 active COVID-19 cases in the country. In all 7,201,070 people have been successfully cured.
The COVID-19 cases in Indonesia rose by 3,520 within one day to 396,454, with the death toll adding by 101 to 13,512, the Health Ministry said.
According to the ministry, 4,576 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 322,248.
The virus has spread to all the country’s 34 provinces.
The Philippines’ Department of Health (DOH) reported 1,524 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 infection, bringing the total number in the country to 373,144.
The DOH said 353 more patients recovered, raising the total number of recoveries to 328,602. The death toll climbed to 7,053 after 14 more patients died from the viral disease, the DOH added.
Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has retained the lockdown restrictions in Metro Manila, one of the epicenters of the outbreak, until November 30.
The Philippines continues to grapple with surging infections despite stricter lockdown imposed in mid-March.
Malaysia registered 835 new COVID-19 infections, bringing the national total to 28,640, the Health Ministry said.
Another two new deaths have been reported, bringing the death toll to 238.
Another 674 patients have been released after recovery, bringing the total cured and discharged to 18,499, or 64.6 percent, of all cases.
South Korea reported 88 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours as of Tuesday, raising its total tally to 26,043.
The daily caseload fell below 100 after 119 recorded in the previous day, but the double-digit increase continued due to small cluster infections in Seoul and its surrounding Gyeonggi province as well as imported cases.
Three more deaths were reported, raising the death toll from the coronavirus pandemic to 460. The total fatality rate stood at 1.77 percent.
Four Solomon Islands nationals, who are soccer players returning from Britain, have been diagnosed with COVID-19.
In a nationwide address through local media SIBC on Tuesday, Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare said the four, together with other 12 soccer players, have been stranded in Britian since earlier this year.
They were among other recently returned passengers that transited through Auckland, New Zealand from countries like Italy, France, Britain which are currently experiencing the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic.
As of Tuesday, Solomon Islands recorded eight COVID-19 cases, with zero death related to the virus. (Xinhua)
